Ingredients
This section includes ingredient notes and substitution options. Get all measurements, ingredients, and instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.
- Cherry Jello Mix: A 6-ounce box or two 3-ounce boxes of cherry jello. Next time I want to try the recipe with half cherry jello and half lime jello.
- Cherry Limeade Vodka: We used Svedka Cherry Limeade Vodka. If you can’t get your hands on a bottle you can use Pinnacle Cherry Vodka or regular vodka. Just replace a bit of the cold water with fresh lime juice to give the shots a similar lime and cherry flavor.
- Limeade: We used Simply Limeade but you could also make homemade limeade from fresh lime juice if you prefer.
- Water: You will need 3 cups of water: 2 cups boiling water and 1 cup of cold water.
- Garnish: Top the jelly shots with a Maraschino cherry & lime wheel for a pop of color. A lime wedge lime zest could be used as well. Or top with whipped cream for a sweet touch.
Equipment
- small saucepan to boil water
- 2 ounce plastic shot cups with lids
- mixing bowl – use a mixing bowl with a spout for easy pouring.

Tips for the Best Cherry Limeade Jello Shots
- Measure Precisely: For the perfect consistency, measure your ingredients exactly. Too much liquid can prevent the jello from setting properly, while too little may result in a too-firm texture.
- Let Set Completely: Patience is key! Ensure your jello shots have fully set by chilling them for at least 4 hours, though overnight is best. I like to make them the night before so that they are sure to be ready by the next day.
- Garnish Creatively: For an extra festive touch for summer parties consider adding a cocktail umbrella to each shot.
Vodka Jello Shot FAQ
The best liquor to make jello shots would be one that complements the flavors you want to incorporate. Popular choices include vodka, rum, and tequila, but ultimately it depends on your personal preference and the flavors you want to achieve.
Jello shots typically take about 2 to 4 hours to set completely in the refrigerator. However, the exact time can depend on the size of the shots and the temperature of your fridge. For best results let them set overnight, that way they are fully firm ready to enjoy the next day.
While the alcohol in jello shots doesn’t change, they do taste more potent the longer they sit, as the flavors and alcohol have more time to infuse into the gelatin.
