Ingredients for Easy Apple Pie Egg Rolls
This section includes ingredient notes and substitution options. Get all measurements, ingredients, and instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.
- Water — This is mixed with the flour to create a thin paste that will be used to seal the egg roll wrappers together.
- All-Purpose Flour — Combine the flour with water to create a sort of glue to hold the apple pie egg rolls together. It’ll keep the filling from spilling into the oil in the fryer.
- Egg Roll Wrappers — Instead of pie crusts, you’ll fill egg roll wrappers with the filling. You can find them in the refrigerated section in most grocery stores. They’ll get nice and crispy when fried.
- Apple Pie Filling — The star of the show! I use canned apple pie filling for this recipe, but this homemade apple pie filling made with lemon juice, brown sugar, granny smith apples, etc… works beautifully, too.
- Sugar — This is used to make the cinnamon sugar coating which sticks to the egg rolls to create a sweet, flavorful crust.
- Cinnamon — Combine it with the sugar to make the coating for the egg wrappers.
- Caramel Sauce — Used as a dipping sauce. The jarred stuff is great, but I have a recipe for homemade caramel sauce that will knock your socks off.

How to Make Fried Apple Pie Egg Rolls
This section shows you how to make the recipe with step-by-step photos and instructions. For the full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.
Step 1: First, make a paste to seal your egg rolls. Whisk the flour and water together in a small bowl. Once mixed, set it aside for later.
Step 2: Now it’s time to fill the egg rolls. Lay the wrapper on a clean surface with one corner facing you. Add 1/3 cup of apple pie filling to the bottom third of the wrapper.
Step 3: Gently fold the bottom corner up over the filling. Dip your finger into the flour-water mixture, and run it along the exposed edges of the wrapper.
Step 4: Bring in the sides of the wrapper, tucking them over the filling, and rolling the wrapper up tightly until you’ve got a neat little roll. Make sure everything is sealed well. Set it aside on a plate and repeat these steps with your remaining wrappers.
Step 5: Heat up your deep fryer or a Dutch oven over medium heat with about 4 inches of vegetable or canola oil, and get it nice and hot — about 350°F. (Or if you prefer to air fry or bake in the oven jump to the appropriate section below.)
Step 6: While your oil is heating, prepare the cinnamon sugar. Just mix your sugar and cinnamon together in a shallow bowl. Easy peasy!
Step 7: Once your oil is ready, carefully place a couple of your egg rolls into the fryer. Fry them until they’re golden brown, which should take around 3-4 minutes. Be sure to flip them a few times to brown them evenly.
Step 8: When they’re perfectly golden, use tongs to lift one out and let any extra oil drip off. While it’s still piping hot, roll egg roll around in your cinnamon sugar until it’s completely coated.
Step 9: Transfer your cinnamon sugar coated egg roll to a wire rack over a sheet tray to catch any extra cinnamon sugar. Repeat with the rest of your egg rolls.
Step 10: Serve these crispy, sweet treats warm with a side of caramel sauce for dipping.
Note: You’ll have leftover cinnamon sugar. You have to make a lot to ensure the egg rolls are completely coated with the mixture.
Air fryer apple pie egg rolls
Don’t want to deep fry? Try making this sweet apple treat in the air fryer instead. They won’t taste the same as their deep-fried counterparts but they will be pretty darn close.
- After wrapping your egg rolls, place them in your air fryer basket, leaving some space in between as to not overcrowd them (the egg roll need space around them so that the hot air can circulate and cook them evenly).
- Spray egg rolls with non-stick cooking spray.
- Air fry at 350°F for 5 minutes.
- Turn them over and give them another light coating of cooking spray. Air fry for 5 more minutes.
- Brush the hot egg rolls with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
Baked apple pie egg rolls
Although I prefer the taste and texture of fried apple pie egg rolls, you can also bake them if you prefer.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
- Place the egg rolls seam side down, lightly coat with non stick spray, and bake for 6-8 minutes.
- Brush egg rolls with melted butter, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, and return to the oven for 4-6 more minutes.
Serving Suggestions
Serve these crispy apple pie egg rolls with warm caramel sauce for dipping. Whipped cream or cream cheese frosting are great options for dunking the egg rolls, too.
Craving something super decadent? Top some of these with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. Yum!
Storage and Freezing
Refrigerator: For best taste, enjoy your apple pie egg rolls immediately. However, you can store leftover egg rolls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freezer: I do not recommend freezing dessert egg rolls.
Reheating: To maintain crispiness, place egg rolls in the oven on a wire rack over a sheet tray to let air circulate on all sides when reheating in the oven. You can also microwave them but they won’t be as crisp.
Tips and Tricks for Crispy Apple Pie Egg Rolls
- Use thick apple pie filling to ensure the filling stays inside the egg rolls while frying. If your apple filling is more like applesauce, it may leak.
- Don’t overcrowd the fryer; this will cause uneven browning. Cook only 2 or so at a time so you have enough room for turning them frequently.
- If you’re not using a fryer with a set temperature, grab a thermometer to make sure your oil comes up to the correct temperature.
Additions and Variations
Try different pie fillings. Swap out the apple pie filling for other flavors, such as cherry, blueberry, peach, or even pumpkin. Keep in mind the consistency should be similar to apple pie filling to ensure it holds up inside the egg roll.
Add cream cheese. For a creamy and indulgent twist, try adding a small spoonful of cream cheese to the apple filling in each egg roll before sealing it. The slight tang of the cream cheese pairs perfectly with the sweet apple filling.
Drizzle with chocolate. After coating the egg rolls with cinnamon sugar, drizzle them with some melted chocolate. This would pair especially well with cherry or strawberry pie filling.
Add apple pie spice. Sprinkle a bit of apple pie spice into your apple pie filling for extra flavor.
Make a vanilla glaze. Rather than dusting with cinnamon sugar, you could make a simple glaze with powdered sugar, milk, and a little vanilla extract. Drizzle this over the top of the egg rolls for a sweet finish that’s similar to cinnamon rolls.

How far in advance can these be made before frying them.
Hi Angie! While I haven’t tried prepping them ahead of time myself, I think that you should be okay to make them the day before frying. I would place the egg rolls a baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Then let them sit at room temp for 15 minutes or so before frying. Please let me know how this works out if you decide to give it a try.
