Ice cream cone cupcakes with red cones, white and blue frosting, red, white and blue sprinkles, and a red candy on top.

I used to love  helping my mom make ice cream cone cupcakes when I was a little girl.

They are just so fun and different — plus the combo of cupcake, icing, and ice cream cone is just totally yummy.

With summer approaching, I thought that it would be the perfect time to make these red, white, and blue ice cream cone cupcakes.

These patriotic cupcakes would be great for 4th of July parties or Memorial Day barbecues.  Or even for Flag Day!

But to be honest, you could totally switch the icing color and sprinkles up to make these treats for any holiday or event.

How to Make Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

These festive cupcakes are very easy to make using boxed cake mix and premade frosting.

Box of Joy brand ice cream cones, white cake mix white frosting, sour cherry candies, blue food coloring, and patriotic sprinkles

For this 4th of July dessert recipe you will need:

  • red ice cream cones (Joy Brand)
  • white cake mix + ingredients called for on box
  • white frosting
  • patriotic sprinkles
  • sour cherry candies
  • blue food coloring
  • piping bag with star tip

Can’t find red ice cream cones?

No worries if you are unable to find the red ice cream cones. Simply use plain color ice cream cones instead.

If you wanted to up the red color in the cupcakes you could use red food coloring to color 1/3 of the icing red, but it isn’t necessary at all. The sprinkles and red candy will help bring red into the treat.

Let’s get baking!

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Batter being scooped into red cones

Then, prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the package.

Spoon batter into cones until they are 3/4 full.

Bake until toothpick inserted in center of cupcake comes out clean (about 15 minutes).

Remove the cupcakes from oven and allow to cool.

Divide the frosting into two parts. Use blue food coloring to dye half the frosting blue.

White frosting on top of ice cream cone cupcakes

Spoon white frosting into a piping bag fitted with a star tip and pipe white frosting onto each cupcake.

Adding blue frosting on top of the white

Then, pipe the blue frosting on top of the white.

Finally, add red, white, and blue sprinkles and a cherry candy on top of each cupcake.  We alternated using red, white, and blue nonpareils and stars.

I hope that you enjoy these fun and easy 4th of July cupcakes.

May be a silly question. But can I use any cake mix? Like strawberry or chocolate? And is it ok if I make the cake from scratch?

YES! Any cake mix works for this recipe–even homemade. Just adjust the cooking temp & time if the cake mix box calls for something different.
