Saltine cracker toffee is a sweet, salty, and crunchy holiday treat made with crisp crackers, buttery homemade toffee, smooth chocolate, and a sprinkle of chopped pecans. Sweet, salty, and crunchy—every bite is addictive (in the best way).

If you’ve tried my Christmas Crack recipe before, this one will feel familiar—but with a nutty twist. Instead of M&Ms, this version features pecans for a more classic, snackable feel. And unlike traditional English Toffee, this recipe is quick, fuss-free, and doesn’t require a candy thermometer.

It’s one of those “everyone asks for the recipe” kinds of treats. Simple to make, easy to share, and perfect for cookie tins, last-minute gifts, or whenever you just want something chocolatey and crisp.

Top-down view of five labeled ingredients for saltine cracker toffee: a plate of saltine crackers, bowls of light brown sugar, semi-sweet chocolate chips, chopped pecans, and a stick of butter.
  • Saltine crackers – The salty base layer that gives this treat its signature crunch. Use about one sleeve (35 crackers).
  • Butter + brown sugar – These melt together into a rich sugar mixture that creates the homemade toffee layer. Use salted or unsalted butter, whatever you have on hand.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips – Once melted, they create a smooth chocolatey topping. Milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips work too.
  • Chopped pecans – Add crunch and a toasted, nutty flavor. Walnuts or sliced almonds are great substitutes.

How to Make Saltine Cracker Toffee

This section shows you how to make the recipe with step-by-step photos and instructions. For the full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange saltines in a single layer (about 35 crackers).

Make toffee: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter with brown sugar, stirring until smooth. Increase heat, bring to a boil, and boil (no stirring) for 3 minutes.

Butter and brown sugar in a saucepan, and crackers topped with the toffee mixture on a lined baking sheet.

Pour & bake: Carefully pour toffee over crackers and spread evenly. Bake for 5 minutes.

Add chocolate: Sprinkle chocolate chips over hot toffee. Let sit 5 minutes, then spread melted chocolate.

Crackers topped with chocolate chips and then fully coated with melted chocolate.

Cool & set: Sprinkle with pecans. Let cool at room temp for 30 minutes, then chill in the fridge until set. Cut into squares once firm and enjoy!

Pro Tip:

Don’t scrape the saucepan! When pouring the hot toffee over the crackers, avoid using a spatula to scrape the sides of the pan. Just pour it out and leave any stuck bits behind.

Why? The sugar that clings to the sides can cool unevenly and crystallize, which can give your toffee a grainy texture.

How to Store Saltine Cracker Toffee

Room temp: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks if your home is cool.

Refrigerator: Keeps fresh and crisp for 2 weeks.

Freezer: Freeze in layers with parchment paper between them for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge or at room temperature.

Tips for the Best Cracker Toffee

  • Line your pan well—this stuff sticks!
  • Don’t stir once the toffee starts boiling.
  • Don’t scrape the saucepan.
  • Work quickly when spreading the chocolate.
  • Chill before cutting for clean edges.

Additions and variations

  • Swap nuts: Try walnuts, almonds, or even pistachios.
  • Use different chocolate: White chocolate or milk chocolate chips are great swaps.
  • Add toppings: Try sea salt flakes, crushed candy canes, or holiday sprinkles.
  • Cracker options: Ritz crackers, club crackers, or graham crackers can replace saltines.
  • Drizzle finish: Add a white chocolate drizzle after setting for extra flair.
  • Toasted pecans: For added flavor, toast your pecans in a dry skillet and let them cool fully before using.
