Ingredients
This section includes ingredient notes and substitution options. Get all measurements, ingredients, and instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.
- Butter– We prefer using salted butter to balance out the sweetness but unsalted butter can also be used if you prefer.
- Miniature Marshmallows– I find the small marshmallows melt down quicker than the large ones but either can be used.
- Rice Krispie Cereal– A 9 ounce box will give you more than enough for this recipe. You could use other brands of crispy rice cereal but I find genuine Rice Krispies make the best Rice Krispie Treats.
- Chocolate egg candies– I like using Cadbury Mini Eggs but Robin’s Eggs, jelly beans, or Jordan almonds would all be great options, too. Really any egg-shaped candy would work.
- Edible Easter Grass– the green apple-flavored edible grass is perfect for making the treats look like a bird’s nest.
Supplies
- large mixing bowl
- large saucepan
- non-stick cooking spray

How to Make Rice Krispie Nests
This section shows you how to make the recipe with step-by-step photos and instructions. For the full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.
Prepare Rice Krispies: Melt butter in a large pot on the stovetop. Add the mini marshmallows and stir until melted. Remove from heat and stir in cereal.
Shape: Press the mixture into the cups of a grease muffin tin. Use your fingers or a spoon to make an indentation in the center to form a nest shape.
Decorate: Once set, remove nests from the pan and top with easter grass and candy eggs.
Storage
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. Place sheets of wax paper between layers to prevent sticking.
I do not recommend freezing Easter rice krispie treats.
Substitutions and variations
Instead of using edible grass, Rice Krispie treat nests can be made with shredded coconut dyed green with green food coloring.
Try adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract to your marshmallow mixture for added flavor.
If you are a chocolate lover try using melted white chocolate color green with food coloring or green candy melts in the rice cups instead of grass. This variation is easier to transport as well since the egg candies stick to the chocolate.
Tips and Tricks
Use fresh marshmallows. Stale marshmallows won’t melt as easily and won’t give the proper texture.
Do not overcook marshmallows. Remove them from the heat as soon as they’re melted. Overcooking will cause them to harden making your crispy treats too hard.
Grease your hands. Lightly grease your hands with non-stick spray to make shaping the rice cereal mixture easier.
