Ingredients
This section includes ingredient notes and substitution options. Get all measurements, ingredients, and instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.
- Butter – Melt unsalted butter to control the salt added to the cookie dough. Or if you have salted butter that works too, just skip the added salt.
- Sugars – I like to use a combination of white sugar and brown sugar for sweetness. The brown sugar also adds a deeper, caramelized flavor. I used light, but either light or dark brown sugar will work.
- Baking powder – This is what helps the cookie to rise and become nice and fluffy. Make sure it’s fresh and hasn’t expired!
- Vanilla extract – A flavor enhancer. I recommend using pure vanilla extract whenever possible.
- Salt – Just a pinch of salt to bring out the flavors of the other ingredients.
- All-purpose flour – As with any baking recipe, measure your flour correctly. Use either a kitchen scale or the spoon and level method.
- Chocolate chips – Semi-sweet is what I prefer in any gooey chocolate chip cookie but you could opt for milk chocolate chips instead. I used up some mini chocolate chips that I had on hand in my panty but you can use regular size chips too.
How to Make a Chocolate Chip Cookie in a Mug
This section shows you how to make the recipe with step-by-step photos and instructions. For the full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.
- Combine everything but the flour. In a small bowl, stir the melted butter, sugars, baking powder, vanilla, and salt. Mix well.
- Mix in the flour. Add the flour and stir to combine.
- Fold in the chocolate chips. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
- Microwave. Transfer the microwave cookie dough to a microwave-safe mug or ramekin. Microwave for 50 seconds (or up to 1 minute – but keep an eye on it so that it doesn’t overcook). It’ll puff up and still be slightly underdone in the center.
- Cool and serve. Allow your mug cookie to cool for a few minutes. Enjoy warm, on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
Pro Tip:
This is an easy recipe that even kids can do on their own. Just be careful as the ramekin or mug will be hot to the touch. Have oven mitts on hand!
Recipe Tips
- This gooey cookie is best served warm.
- We love it topped with a scoop of ice cream, but you could drizzle some caramel on top or add a dollop of whipped cream.
- You could melt the butter directly in the mug and mix the ingredients directly in there too. It’s not as neat as mixing it separately and then transferring it, but it’s an option.
- Serve your chocolate chip mug cookie with a dessert spoon. It’s not like a traditional chocolate chip cookie that you would eat pick up and eat.
Additions and Variations
- Swap the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, peanut butter chips, or white chocolate chips instead. You could even use toffee bits.
- Add nuts for a crunchy texture. Peanuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts, etc.
- Add a sprinkle of coarse sea salt overtop. It’s the perfect sweet and salty flavor combination.
