A quick and easy snow ice cream recipe made with whole milk, sugar, vanilla, salt, and freshly fallen snow.

Over the last 48 hours, we have gotten about 24 inches of snow out here in Western New Jersey.

Seeing all that freshly fallen snow on the ground reminded me of one of my favorite Winter activities as a little girl–making ice cream out of snow!

So naturally, I decided to whip up a batch with my 3-year-old son.

Snow Ice Cream

If you are looking for how to make snow ice cream without sweetened condensed milk or evaporated milk, you have come to the right place.

Unlike other recipes, this one is made with regular milk. I prefer using regular milk because I don’t tend to have either canned milk product on hand and a snowstorm isn’t exactly the best time to make a trip to the store.

That said, if you prefer using sweetened condensed milk or evaporated milk you can absolutely do so. More on this further down in the post.

What You’ll Need

Start by gathering your ingredients and supplies.

milk, vanilla extract, snow, salt, sugar

Ingredients

  • milk: we use whole milk but you could use whatever you have on hand
  • vanilla: use pure vanilla extract for best results
  • snow: clean, fresh snow
  • salt: just a pinch
  • sugar: regular ol’ granulated sugar
  • sprinkles: optional, but always fun!

Tip: Get your mixing bowl and all your other ingredients mixed and ready to go before getting the snow. This will ensure it is as cold /frozen as possible.

You will also need the following kitchen supplies: a large mixing bowl, a medium mixing bowl, a whisk, and a spoon.

How to Make Snow Ice Cream with Whole Milk

Whisk to combine sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and salt.

Add 8 cups of snow (fresh clean snow!!!) to a large bowl.

Pour the milk mixture over the snow and stir to combine.

Add more snow if needed to reach your desired consistency.

The amount of snow that you use will vary based on the consistency of your snow. If it is light and fluffy snow you will need more than if it is dense heavy snow.

How to Make Snow Ice Cream without Milk

You can use a can of sweetened condensed milk or evaporated milk instead of milk. Simply use in place of the milk called for in the recipe.

You could even use a can of sweetened condensed coconut milk to make it dairy-free.

Note: If using sweetened condensed milk you don’t have to add any additional sugar since it is already sweetened.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • 8-10 cups fresh clean snow
  • sprinkles optional

Instructions

  • In a medium-size bowl, whisk to combine milk, sugar, vanilla, and salt.
  • Pour mixture over 8 cups of snow and stir to combine. If needed, stir in up to 2 cups more snow to reach the desired consistency.
  • Scoop into bowls, add sprinkles (optional), and enjoy!

Notes

Consume snow at your own risk.

  3. We used to make this when I was a kid too! This is weird, but the recipe I have in an old cookbook has raw eggs in it. And I’m pretty sure that’s hiwcwe made it. What would be tge purpose if that?! Of course we drank raw milk and ate raw cookie dough too and survived lol! Gotta take some risks sometimes! Stil, that sounds kinda gross now🤣
