Buffalo Check coasters, one with a white mug on top

While we made our tile coasters with a buffalo check pattern for a farmhouse style, you can use a different color or a different pattern for different results. They can be customized in so many fun and exciting ways. More on how you can customize this DIY project later.

If you’re not the most crafty person, you will enjoy how easy of a project this is.

Cut out some paper, apply it to your tile, and then add some felt underneath. It’s that easy!

Just be sure to trace the tile and not assume measurements as many times the claimed measurements of your tile are not exact.

DIY Tile Coasters with Scrapbook Paper

Oftentimes when I go shopping for scrapbook paper, I can go pretty wild. There are so many fun patterns so I end up with a huge stockpile of patterned scrapbook paper.

With this fun DIY coasters project, I can put my scrapbook paper stockpile to good use.

How to make tile coasters

PREPARE PAPER: Trace the tile onto the back of your chosen scrapbook paper and cut it out.

APPLY MOD PODGE: Brush some mod podge onto the back of the scrapbook paper and apply it to the top side of the tile. Apply 1-3 additional coats on the top side to create a seal.

ADD FELT: Trace the tile onto the back of some felt and cut it out. Glue it onto the underside of the tile with hot glue. Or make your life easier and use these instead.

Are these tile coasters water and heatproof?

Somewhat. Mod Podge does a great job but it is not fool-proof. For the best results, you may want to consider also applying a high-quality sealant.

Are the DIY coasters dishwasher safe?

To play on the safe side, I recommend spot washing these only. But if you feel like taking a chance, make sure to place them on the top rack.

Can I use something else to decorate the coasters?

Absolutely! While we used scrapbook paper, you can also use things like wrapping paper, magazine clippings, wallpaper, etc. There are so many creative ways to switch it up and make your DIY coasters unique.

How can I best customize these for gifting?

If you’re gifting these to family and friends during the holidays, the last thing you want is to give everyone something super generic. Instead, consider what they would enjoy seeing on their coaster.

Maybe Uncle Johnny is obsessed with comics and would love a superhero-themed set of coasters. Or maybe your mom really enjoys wine and you could find some fun wine-themed paper (paired with her favorite bottle of course!). There are so many ways to customize these for those you’re gifting to.

    1. That should work. Depending on the type and texture of your ribbon if you find the Mod Podge isn’t cutting it you may need to use a different kind of adhesive.
